The top 10 things everyone needs for summer list is here! This is my list of what I think are summertime essentials!
1. A Bucket List
Summer is here for most of us. So it’s time to have fun, relax, swim and spend time with family with friends.
To begin with, every summer my family sits down to write a summer bucket list. We each get to pick 2 things that we want to do that the whole family can do together.
There’s 5 of us so that makes 10 fun times that we all know we will get to be together!
For example, last year we went to a drive in movie. We had so much fun that we went and bought an outdoor screen and projector so that we could have our own drive in theater in our backyard.
The above picture is not of our movie screen. It’s just that this one looks so much better than ours so I thought I’d post this one instead!
And a big plus is that this is something that all ages can enjoy, even those cranky teenagers!
The sun can be dangerous if you don’t protect yourself.
However no one wants to stay cooped up in the house while everyone else is at the beach. We all need to take precautions in the sun.
Most importantly, EVERYONE NEEDS SUNSCREEN!!! Do not leave home without it.
I can tell you from experience how bad it can be when you don’t use sunscreen.
I got a severe sunburn at my son’s baseball game about four years ago.
In fact I got second and third degree burns on my shins and tops of my feet. My ankles were blue and swollen and the pain was intolerable.
It lasted for over a month. As a result I have permanent scaring from it. Not one of those fun summer moments I’ve been talking about.
According to the Cancer Treatment Centers Of America, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. There are more than three million cases diagnosed a year.
As a rule, if you find a dark spot on your skin, a lesion, a bump on the skin that won’t go away or a wound that won’t heal, seek the advice of a healthcare professional as soon as possible. Skin cancer can be curable if caught early enough.
3. A Summer Vibe
Sunglasses not only make you look cool but they also are a great way to help protect your skin and eyes from Ultraviolet rays.
I wear my sunglasses year round as I’m sure some of you do too. At 45 I am constantly told I could pass for my mid twenties. (I swear I’m not exaggerating!)
My eyes don’t have any wrinkles yet! Some of it is genetics but most of it is that I protect my eyes every time I go outside.
I also use Meaningful Beauty face sunscreen lotion every day in my morning routine. A lesson I learned the hard way when I burnt my legs.
4. Summertime Fun With Friends And Family
There are many more things everyone needs for summer. There’s really so much fun to have. But what’s the point of doing anything without your friends and family.
So invite them to the beach, or a waterpark or to your house for a barbeque. Just hang out and relax. Summer adventures when I was younger are some of my favorite memories.
I remember camping in New Hampshire with my family and two other families that came with us. We hiked, fished, swam and hit the Alpine Slides which I loved! All amazing memories!
5. Photography: Take Lots Of Pictures
These days everyone has a cell phone with a camera.
Even 6 year olds have cell phones.
( I personally made all my kids wait until they reached the middle school before getting them a cell phone. And then it was more about me wanting to keep tabs on them since I would no longer be volunteering in their classrooms.)
So put those phones to good use over the summer. Take pictures of every thing and everyone.
Catch those beautiful sunsets and capture those magnificent waves. You can turn some of those pictures into post cards or thank you cards. You can even use one as an invitation.
There are tons of online companies that can convert your pictures into all these thigs and more.
Go on a hike and take pictures of nature.
The summer is the best excuse there is to take a selfie without being judged. It’s called “summertime fun” for a reason.
So capture all the moments you can. And at the end of the summer make a collage of all your pictures and hang them up so you have them to remind you all year long of all the fun you had!
6. Summer Fashion
Having a great swimsuit is crucial to your summer. If I don’t have at least one good swimsuit it changes where I go and what I do. I really like the swimsuits that have short or long sleeves to give you more protection from the sun.
Shorts, tank tops, flip flops and the perfect swimsuit is usually all you need for the day. You don’t have to fuss with so many layers of clothing.
Grab yourself some cute cutoffs when you shop for new swimsuits for the kids. And I’m sure just like me you have to go swimsuit shopping every year because those sweet little ones of ours grow so fast!
7. Food and BBQ
Who doesn’t love to eat at all those barbeques in the summer? There’s watermelon, corn on the cob, pasta salads, burgers and hotdogs.
I don’t know about you but I love hotdogs!
Particularly, summer hotdogs! They are just better than any other hotdog throughout the year.
There’s something about a hotdog from the grill that makes me get into the summer mood. (I like mine with ketchup, but I’m from the Boston area so don’t judge me!)
8. Ice Cream And Popsicles
Another great thing about the summer, ice cream!!! I love a good soft serve ice cream cone!
Add in slushies, popsicles, Dippin Dots and Italian ice and you got yourself a party!
I could probably go to Dairy Queen every day of the week and still feel like I want more.
As far as the kiddos go, they have always loved popsicles and Italian ice. We made homemade popsicles every night when they were little.
And even now my 20 year old still opens the freezer and asks where the mom pops are.
Because that’s what we called them. Since it was my original idea, they started referring to them as “mommy pops”. Which to me is just so cute even after all these years later!
In short, eat all the ice cream, slushies, Italian ice and popsicles you want and don’t feel one bit guilty about it.
By the way, try the recipes from cincyshopper.com. I made the vanilla and the mint chocolate chip and they are sooooo good!!
I’m talking to all you moms out there. I don’t care what kind of diet you are on. Everyone gets to eat ice cream in the summertime!
9. Activities and Crafts
There are so many fun activities for the kiddos during the hot months. Add water to anything and it instantly will not only feel like summer but it can be fun for the whole family.
